Madeira's Caty McNally won her opening-round match at the Cincinnati Open but fell to No. 18 seed Anna Kalinskaya in straight sets Saturday, ending her singles campaign at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.

McNally, the World No. 70, beat fellow American McCartney Kessler 6-3, 6-4 in the first round before running into Kalinskaya, ranked 21st in the world, in the Round of 64. The Russian won 6-4, 6-4, converting 5 of 10 break points, including a decisive break in the ninth game of the second set to snap a 4-4 tie, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

McNally said afterward that she knew the matchup would be difficult, calling Kalinskaya "a very dangerous player" who "can hit anyone off the court" when she's seeing the ball well. She added that she wished she had done more to disrupt Kalinskaya's rhythm.

The 24-year-old is competing in the Cincinnati Open for the sixth time in eight years. She grew up attending the tournament as a fan, chasing players for autographs. At media day on Aug. 12, she called her return to the main draw a "pinch-me moment," telling the Cincinnati Open's media team, "I'm just a girl from the 513 and I love to support my home town."

McNally reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 50 in June after returning from elbow surgery that interrupted her 2024 season. She is 16-10 overall in her last 10 events and has won at least one main-draw match at each of her last five WTA 1000 tournaments.

Her week in Mason isn't over. McNally will partner with Iva Jovic, ranked No. 16 in the world, in the women's doubles draw. The pair faces the Chinese duo of Tang Qianhui and Xu Yifan in the first round on Tuesday, Aug. 18. Jovic carries a 30-17 record in 2026, including 16-8 on hard courts.

Mason native Peyton Stearns, ranked 53rd in the world, also exited singles on Saturday, falling to Denmark's Clara Tauson 7-6, 1-6, 7-5. Stearns will play doubles Monday alongside Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk against Serena and Venus Williams in what will be the sisters' first doubles appearance together since Serena came out of retirement earlier this summer.
