Sycamore High School senior quarterback Ty Thomas earned WLWT's Week 8 Primetime Performer award after leading the Aviators to a 36-35 upset of No. 17 Oak Hills on Saturday, Oct. 10.
The honor caps a performance that snapped Sycamore's 23-game losing streak, a drought that dated to Sept. 20, 2024.
Thomas completed 27 of 38 passes for 365 yards and three touchdowns against one interception, according to WLWT's Blitz Recap stat line. WLWT's Primetime Performer feature credited him with four total touchdowns, though the Blitz Recap listed three passing scores. The station had already named Thomas a Friday Night Star before selecting him as the week's top performer.
Thomas told WLWT it was the best game night the team has had in a long time.
Receivers Zeontay Smoot and Trenton Meadows combined for 242 receiving yards and four touchdowns, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. Quarterback Zachary Brandan connected with Smoot on the game-winning 10-yard pass with less than a minute remaining. Sycamore then converted the two-point try to take the lead for good.
The Aviators never trailed by more than six points and overcame two turnovers in a game that produced nearly 1,000 yards of total offense, per the Enquirer.
The Journal-News called it the fourth-biggest upset in Ohio this season. Sycamore entered as a 33-point underdog against an Oak Hills squad that was 4-3 and held the No. 10 seed in the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Division I, Region 4 computer-points rankings.
The turnaround is striking. Sycamore was shut out 41-0 by No. 9 Middletown in Week 6. Two weeks later, Thomas and the Aviators put up 36 points on a ranked opponent on the road.
As we reported Oct. 13, the victory was Sycamore's first since Sept. 20, 2024. The Aviators have two regular-season games remaining before the OHSAA playoffs begin Friday, Oct. 30.
