Madeira's playoff hopes rest on the final stretch of the regular season after the Mustangs dropped to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Cincinnati Hills League. Sycamore, winless at 0-7 and 0-6 in the Greater Miami Conference, faces another ranked opponent Friday, Oct. 9.

The Blitz 5 Top 25 rankings, published Monday, Oct. 5 by WLWT and TriStateFootball.com, frame the Week 8 picture for both programs. Neither team cracked the Top 25, but the rankings spell out what each squad is up against.

Madeira: bubble team with work to do

The Mustangs absorbed a 41-7 loss to undefeated Wyoming in Week 7. Wyoming, ranked No. 23 in the Blitz 5, improved to 7-0 and 4-0 in the CHL. The Cowboys have won five of seven games by more than 20 points.

That loss matters beyond the standings. The most recent OHSAA computer ratings, released Sept. 29, placed Madeira 13th in Division V, Region 20 with 4.4609 points. The top 12 teams in each region qualify for the playoffs. Madeira sat one spot outside the cutline before the Wyoming loss.

Updated OHSAA ratings reflecting Week 7 results are expected Tuesday, Oct. 6.

Madeira's Week 8 matchup carries conference weight. The Mustangs travel to Indian Hill on Friday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. at Tomahawk Stadium for a CHL game. Indian Hill sat 11th in Division III, Region 12 in the Sept. 29 ratings, inside that region's playoff field.

The OHSAA football calendar shows the regular season ends Oct. 25, with playoff qualifiers announced Oct. 26 and the first round of regionals scheduled for Oct. 30. The tournament entry deadline is Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Sycamore: 0-7 and facing ranked Oak Hills

The Aviators fell to Colerain 41-23 in Week 7. Colerain, ranked No. 16 in the Blitz 5 at 4-3 and 4-2 in the GMC, has won three straight while scoring at least 41 points in each game.

Sycamore did not appear in the top 16 of Division I, Region 4 in the Sept. 29 OHSAA ratings. The 12th-place team in that region, Springboro, held 6.8667 points with a 3-3 record.

It does not get easier. Oak Hills, ranked No. 17 in the Blitz 5 at 4-3 and 3-3 in the GMC, visits Sycamore on Friday, Oct. 9. In Week 7, Oak Hills' Anquan Evans accounted for four touchdowns in a 42-14 win over Hamilton. The Highlanders scored the final 35 points of that game after trailing 14-7.

Madeira kicks off at Tomahawk Stadium at 7 p.m. Friday. Sycamore hosts Oak Hills the same night.
