Indian Hill blanked Madeira 35-0 on Friday, Oct. 9, at Tomahawk Stadium in a Cincinnati Hills League matchup. The shutout was the Braves' third in a row and pushed the Mustangs further from the OHSAA playoff field.
The loss dropped Madeira to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in CHL play. The Mustangs have now lost three straight, a skid that began with a 38-14 loss at Deer Park on Sept. 25 and continued with a 41-7 home defeat to Wyoming on Oct. 2.
Madeira entered the week ranked 15th in OHSAA Division V, Region 20, three spots outside the 12-team playoff field, according to Cincinnati Enquirer ratings released Oct. 6. The Enquirer noted that Madeira, along with Purcell Marian and Blanchester, were "outside the bubble and have work to do." Post-Week 8 ratings had not been released as of Tuesday, Oct. 13.
For Indian Hill, the win was the latest display from a defense that has shut out three straight opponents. The Braves improved to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play, placing them third in the CHL. They blanked Finneytown 58-0 on Oct. 2 before shutting out Madeira, according to MaxPreps.
Head coach John Rodenberg, now in his fifth season at Indian Hill and his 33rd year as a high school head coach, built this defense around returning talent from a team that went 13-1 and reached the Division IV state semifinals in 2025. Junior linebackers Topher Wachtel and Joey Jernigan anchored last year's unit with 83 tackles apiece. Senior defensive back Dylan Hartman earned Division IV first-team all-state honors.
"Our defense last year statistically might have been the best defense I've ever had in my career … It was crazy how good we were," Rodenberg said in a July WCPO preseason feature.
Indian Hill moved up to Division III this season and sat 12th in Region 12 entering Week 8, holding the last qualifying spot with a 7.4898 computer rating. The Braves have two regular-season games remaining to hold or improve that standing.
Madeira's path is steeper. The Mustangs host Taylor on Friday, Oct. 16, then travel to Mariemont on Friday, Oct. 23, in their regular-season finale. Madeira needs wins in both to have a chance at climbing back into the Region 20 field before the OHSAA playoffs begin Oct. 30.
Indian Hill hosts Deer Park for Senior Night on Friday, Oct. 16, then closes the regular season at Reading on Friday, Oct. 23.
