Robert Sprague, Ohio’s Republican state treasurer, is running for secretary of state in the Nov. 3, 2026, general election. The official certified candidate list identifies Sprague, Democrat Allison Russo and Libertarian Tom Pruss as the candidates.

Experience

His official treasury biography says he became treasurer in January 2019 after serving as Findlay treasurer and auditor and in the Ohio House from 2011 through 2018.

The biography lists a mechanical engineering degree from Duke University and an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It describes private-sector work with Ernst & Young and his own consulting firm.

As treasurer, his office says he launched ResultsOHIO, oversaw Family Forward adoption loans and expanded participation in STABLE disability savings accounts. Those are programs associated with his current office.

On the issues

Sprague’s election-security platform calls for access to federal citizenship information when checking voter registrations, photo identification for mail voting and elimination of ballot drop boxes.

He proposes paper ballots or a voter-verifiable paper record, along with bipartisan reviews of election procedures and ballot custody after each election.

For voter lists, he proposes an internal audit team, information from credit bureaus and financial companies, and an annual report to the Legislature describing maintenance procedures.

He also favors making Election Day a state holiday, which he calls “We the People Day,” and moving primarily toward in-person voting with limited exceptions.

These are campaign proposals. His arguments about risks associated with drop boxes and mail voting are his rationale for those changes, rather than findings established by this profile.
