Madeira High School earned the No. 2 spot in Ohio and No. 165 nationally in the U.S. News & World Report 2026-2027 Best High Schools rankings, released Aug. 18.
Superintendent Kenji Matsudo shared the achievement at the district's fall Senior Citizen Coffee, held in the Perin Learning Commons at Madeira High School. The event, held twice a year, drew former school board members, parents, grandparents and alumni.
Only Walnut Hills High School, which ranked No. 76 nationally, finished ahead of Madeira in Ohio. Two other east-side schools also cracked the state's top 10: Mariemont High School at No. 4 (No. 207 nationally) and Indian Hill High School at No. 10 (No. 351 nationally), Dayton 24/7 Now reported.
U.S. News evaluated about 27,000 eligible schools nationwide and ranked nearly 18,000 of them, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Assistant Superintendent Dave Bergan also addressed the crowd about the state report card. He said Madeira has received the maximum star rating every year the state has used the system. The district's Performance Index score tied for eighth among 607 Ohio public school districts, with a score of 99.3, up from 98.9 in 2025, according to Cleveland.com's statewide ranking. The Performance Index measures student test results from third grade through high school.
"Since the inception of the State Report Card in 1997-98, Madeira has always been regarded at the highest levels," Matsudo said at the event. "Our legacy of delivering a high-quality education is strong."
Three seniors also spoke.
Boden Starr, Lily Morgan and Lily Lex each described the impact their teachers have had on them and the bond between the school and community, according to the district's event recap.
Jim Decatur, a 1950 Madeira High School graduate, was in the audience. He called the students "well-spoken" and said he was proud of his alma mater.
