Indian Hill's athletic department is one of just 10 programs across Ohio to earn the Bruce Brown Award of Excellence from the Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association this year.
The district announced the honor Tuesday, Aug. 4, crediting Brian Phelps, director of alumni and activity advancement, with leading the application process.
The award recognizes schools that demonstrate best practices and nationally accepted standards in education-based athletics, according to the OIAAA. It is named after Bruce Brown, the association's first executive director.
"This recognition is a reflection of the outstanding student-athletes, coaches, administrators, parents, and community members who make Indian Hill Athletics special," Phelps said. "We believe athletics are an extension of the classroom, providing opportunities for students to develop leadership, resilience, teamwork, and character."
The application evaluated the district across 10 criteria domains including philosophy of education-based athletics, risk management, access and equity, sports medicine, innovation and emergency action plans for student-athlete mental health. Applicants must hold a Certified Athletic Administrator credential, and an athletic administrator can receive the award only once.
Superintendent Melissa Stewart called the honor an affirmation of the athletic department's work and the broader community's support, noting the dedication of coaches, staff, families and student-athletes.
The comprehensive application process assessed the district's adherence to best practices in program management, student-athlete support systems, professional development and community engagement. The $100 application fee and cohort-based structure mean schools must commit resources beyond paperwork to pursue the recognition.
