A Hamilton County sheriff's deputy suffered minor injuries after a window blew out at a burning Silverton barbershop Monday, Oct. 5. Fire crews from Indian Hill, Madeira, Blue Ash and Deer Park-Silverton all responded to the early-morning blaze on Montgomery Road.

The deputy was on patrol around 5 a.m. when he spotted heavy flames at Razor 1 Kutz Barber Shop, first reported by WLWT. He stopped to check whether anyone was inside and ensure the building was evacuated.

He was not fighting the fire. A window blew out, sending glass into his arm, Deer Park/Silverton Fire Chief Dennis Meador II told FOX 19. The deputy was treated at the scene and is expected to be OK.

A resident who lives above the shop was not injured.

Meador said the blaze was contained quickly. Units from the Indian Hill Fire Department, Madeira Fire Department, Blue Ash Fire Department and the Deer Park-Silverton Joint Fire District responded to the scene.

Montgomery Road was closed for more than an hour between Section and Plainfield roads before reopening.

Owner Don Hudson, who opened Razor 1 Kutz on Montgomery Road in 2015, told Local 12 that investigators believe the fire started from an electrical short circuit near the shop's front window. The cause officially remains under investigation.

"I was most thankful that it happened a few hours in the morning when there was no operations because I would hate for it to be happening when we have people inside the shop and it could have gotten worse," Hudson said.

Inside the shop, piles of glass, charred blow-dryers and a partially torn-up ceiling remained after the fire. A damage estimate was not immediately available.

"It's tough, especially when you see something that you built from scratch, and then this happened," Hudson said.

He said he plans to take his barbering business mobile to keep serving clients while the shop is repaired.
