About 30 Sycamore Township streets will see lane restrictions and temporary closures starting the week of Monday, July 28, as the township begins its 2026 cape seal pavement preservation project.
Strawser Construction, a Columbus-based contractor that also performed the township's 2023 cape seal work, will handle the project, according to a resident notification letter dated Wednesday, July 23, and signed by Mike Gould, assistant superintendent and project manager for the Sycamore Township Service Department.
The project covers approximately 84,400 square yards of roadway spread across five scheduled work days. Streets affected include Vyette Place, Rosemary Lane, Yakima Drive, Grinnell Drive, Taylor Avenue, St. Regis Drive, Winnetka Drive, Glenellyn Drive, Monroe Avenue, Pine Road, Spencer Avenue, Woodlawn Avenue, Harrison Avenue, Lancaster Avenue, Beech Avenue, Lake Avenue, and Emerald Avenue, among others.
What to expect on the road
Cape seal is a two-phase treatment. The first phase is a chip seal interlayer. The second phase, a micro surfacing coat, follows seven to 10 days later.
During chip seal work, each street should take one to two hours, and residents should still be able to get in and out of their driveways, according to the township's letter. During the micro surfacing phase, streets may be temporarily closed and vehicle access restricted until barricades or cones are removed. Emergency vehicles will maintain access throughout.
The township said temporary "No Parking" signs will be posted before each phase begins. Vehicles left in the work area may be towed.
What residents should do
The township's notification asks residents on affected streets to:
- Remove vehicles from the street during posted no-parking periods
- Turn off sprinklers and irrigation systems on scheduled work days
- Keep children and pets away from construction equipment
- Reschedule lawn care and deliveries when possible
- Avoid sharp turns, sudden stops, or twisting tires on newly treated surfaces
- Wait at least six hours after a road reopens before parking on the new surface
Schedule is weather-dependent
The work schedule may shift due to rain or unsuitable conditions, the township noted. No specific calendar dates have been assigned to individual streets beyond the five-day sequencing plan.
The treatment is not a full repaving but a preservation measure for roads already in fair to good condition.
